Meshack Asare

Meshack Asare is one of Africa's top children's writers and illustrators, and has won numerous awards including The Noma Award for Publishing in Africa. 1982 and the 1999 Toyota/Children's Literature Foundation Best Picture Story Book Illustrator's award, the 1999 Unesco First Prize for Children and Young People's Literature in the Service of Tolerance.

Meshack Asare, born 1945 in Ghana, studied Fine Arts at the College of Art in Kumasi and taught in Ghana for 12 years between 1967 and 1979. During that period, he took an extension course in Educational Psychology at the University of Wisconsin.

Nigerian writer Chukwuemeka Ike was awarded the 2008 Fonlon-Nichols Award at the African Literature Association meeting in Illinois during April. Previous winners of the award include Niyi Osundare, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and Wole Soyinka.

Mahmood Mamdani

Mahmood Mamdani is the Herbert Lehman Professor of Government in the Departments of Anthropology and Political Science at Columbia University in the United States. He is also the Director of Columbia's Institute of African Studies. He is the current President of the Council for Development of Social Research in Africa (CODESRIA) Dakar, Senegal.
Mamdani's reputation as an expert in African history, politics and international relations has made him an important voice in contemporary debates about Africa.

His book Citizen and Subject: Contemporary Africa and the Legacy of Late Colonialism won the 1998 Herskovits Award of the African Studies Association of the USA.
In 2001, he was one of nine scholars to present at the Nobel Peace Prize Centennial Symposium.
