Basutoland Records, Vol. 4. 1868

Edited by George McCall Theal

The colonisation process of Lesotho by Britain was phased over a period of over forty years from the early 1840s when Britain disannexed Lesotho from the Cape Colony and assumed direct responsiblity. These volumes contain records of correspondence and other documents on the phase of Britain's colonisation of Lesotho, 1868-1972, when the High Commissioner, Sir Philip Wodehouse, declared Lesotho British territory and the Basotho, British subjects, and authorised the reannexation of Lesotho to the Cape Colony. The first volume is introduced with an essay by Motlatsi Tabane in which he uses the sources here-presented to argue for deeper examination of personalities and their significance for the colonisation process; against over-reliance on economic arguments. All three volumes contain translated Dutch and French texts, many photographs, and comprehensive glossaries.
