Beyond Inequalities 2005. Women in Zambia

Nakatiwa G. Mulikita, Sara Longwe

The Zambia chapter in the Beyond Inequalities series was produced by the WIDSAA Programme of SARDC and the Zambia Association for Research and Development (ZARD), an independent research institute which focuses on gender issues. The publication assesses the progress made in Zambia in relation to the implementation of the National Gender Policy, the Beijing Platform of Action and the SADC Gender and Development Declaration. It presents analysis of the situation of women relative to men in various sectors including education, health, agriculture, employment and decision-making. It further assesses the seriousness of government policy interventions to address gender inequality. The study concludes that generally, the status of women in Zambia is poor and lagging behind that of men, and sets out recommendations to close the gender gap.
