The first of its kind, this book documents and analyzes the international dimension of higher education in Africa based on country case-studies and a consideration of relevant historical and contemporary themes. It identifies trends, developments, and challenges related to the international dimension of higher educational at the institutional, national, and regional levels. It explores the institutional the opportunities and probes the risks while it responds to the growing need for information and analysis of internationalization of higher education in Africa. On the basis of this book project, an effort is underway to establish the African Network for Internationalization of Education (ANIE). This network aims to develop research capacity and expertise to meet the professional and practical needs of individuals, institutions and organizations interested in the international dimension of higher education in Africa.

About the Authors

Damtew Teferra

Damtew Teferra is currently Director for Africa and the Middle East at the Ford Foundation International Fellowship Program, based at the Institute of International Education in New York. Until recently, he was Associate Research Professor of Higher Education at the Center for International Higher Education, Lynch School of Education, Boston College. Teferra is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Higher Education in Africa and the Founder and Director of the International Network for Higher Education in Africa. Dr. Teferra is the Senior Editor of the Conover-Porter Award-winning book, African Higher Education: An International Reference Handbook (Indiana University Press, 2003).

Jane Knight

Jane Knight focuses her research and professional interests on the international dimenson of higher education at the institutional, system, national, and international levels. She is the author/editor of many publications on internationlisation concepts and strategies, quality assurance, instiutional management, mobility, crossborder education, GATS, and capacity building. In the last 10 years she has taken a leadership role in working with the international teams on four regional studles/publications in the internationalisation of higher education in Europe/North America, Asia Pacific, and Latin America, and now Africa. Currently she is a Fulbright New Century Scholar and an adjunct professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Eduction, University of Toronto.
