Indaba 2001. Changer les vies

Edited by Trust de la Foire Int. du Livre

The theme of the Indaba 2001, preceding the Zimbabwe International Book Fair in 2001, was the promotion of a reading culture in Africa and this book compiles the major contributions made. Participants were from anglophone, francophone, lusophone and North Africa, and the focus was on Senegal in particular, and the francophone experience generally.

The contributors address: culture and literacy from the perspectives of the writer, language and policy. knowledge production, the role of the publisher in promoting a reading culture, scholarship, indigenous languages and the role of children's literature; and strategies and book policy implications for developing a reading culture. A range of anglophone and francophone and African language perspectives are cited.

The dialogues have a common aim: to locate areas of commonality and co-operation, and diversity and conflict between different cultures in a context of globalisation.
