The Gold under the Water
A Wildlife Conservation Reader
A piece of creative writing centring on the life of a family, and a young girl, Beatrice, living in a small village called Kalinde, on the shores of Lake Sabala in Zambia. The lake was famous for its abundance of fish, and the livelihood of the community depended on it. But recently the lake had not been giving the people of the village as many fish as it had before; it was becoming polluted and subject to illegal activities. The story explores what happens to the family as their natural environment deteriorates. The environmental morals of the story provide clues to the education and knowledge that will be necessary for young and old alike, if its preservation of this environment is to be achieved.
