The Life and Times of Paramount Chief Madam Ella Koblo Gulama

by Talabi Aisie Lucan

Ella Koblo was the first woman to be Paramount Chief in Laiyamba Chiefdom, Moyamba District, in Sierra Leone. She was the first Sierra Leone woman to enter the Legislature in 1957. In 1963, she was elected to Parliament, and appointed a Minister of State, thus becoming the first female cabinet minister in West Africa. This slim biography is intended as a testament to her life and achievements, and as an encouragement to young African women and girls to identify with positive female role models. It is the first in a series of biographies on eminent Sierra Leonean women of the twentieth century. The author is an educationalist and writer. She has been president of the Sierra Leone Association of Writers and Illustrators, the Sierra Leone Library Board, and sits on the boards of several NGOs.
