Nhemeramitupo is a poetry collection which embraces almost all types of totems (Mitupo) in Zimbabwe. The famous poet, Oscar Gwiriri witfully fused these totems in his poems on different relationship themes, nature, life, death, and many more. He crafted a pleasurable read, thus deviating from the common style of totem praise. Totem poetry has been commonly used within and around Zimbabwe since time immemorial. It is most popular for addressing each other, praise, humour and rebuking. Some people soliloquise totems for self praise and gathering self- confidence. It is also used towards individuals or clans. Totems praise is still vibrant amongst the rural and urban citizenry of different tribes, as it is evidenced by its customisation on regalia during social functions, pimping of cars and general walks of life. A mannerism of totem acknowledgement during a conversation is another trait that has been exploited in this collection. The poems figuratively lyrics, narrates and dramatises how the Shona people relate in their day-to-day life. This book is a historical preserve of the origins of different clans, as some of the poems chronologically state family trees and ancient migrations. It shall pass on the Shona culture from generation to generation. It is suitable for pleasure reading as well as academic referencing.
