Kwesi Brew

Kwesi Brew has been acknowledged as one of West Africa's most significant poets. Born 1928 in Cape Coast, Ghana of a Fanti Family, he was one of the first graduates of the university of Ghana (Legon), then called the College of Gold Coast. Along with his many literary and cultural activities, he has also to his credit a long and distinguished career in the service of his country. As a member of Ghana's diplomatic corps, he served in England, France, India, Germany and the USSR and after being Chief Protocol in Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was the Ambassador to Mexico, Senegal and Lebanon. Active in college dramatics, he acted in a number of films made by the Gold Coast Film Unit. His poems have appeared in numerous publications, including such anthologies as Modern Poetry from Africa (Beier and Moore, 1963), Messages, Poems from Ghana (Adali Mortty and Awoonor, 1971), Aftermath (Bruchac and Weaver, 1977) and Voice of Ghana (Swanzy).
